Leading a More Spiritual Year in 2019

Updated: Jan 30, 2019

Even though we are barely over a week into 2019, things are changing in a big way. Each New Year offers us a chance to start fresh; to remake things anew. Whether it's an old habit we wish to break, a goal we have in mind or something else entirely, it seems that when we tack up that new calendar on the wall, our minds and our subconscious lock on to the realm of possibility.

  • No matter where we are in the world, we all seem to have something in mind as we start the year out. None of us are alone in our individual quests to face what's to come with fresh eyes and a whole lot of hope to meet the challenge. Each one of us has our own challenges to face on an everyday basis; and the daily news cycle isn't helping matters any either! The New Year is the perfect time to take stock of what you have going on a personal, and especially spiritual level. This is the time when people become very reflective about what's working in their lives and what isn't. Here are some ideas on how to nurture your Self on a number of levels in 2019.

  • Meditate - One of the best ways to do this is to begin some sort of spiritual practice. To do this, you might decide that taking up a daily practice of meditation might be a perfect approach. In as little as 5 -10 minutes each day, you can become more focused and relaxed. Even in this day and age of high stress and schedules that seem more hectic than ever, it really takes less effort than you might think. There are wonderful apps available for free on the web which can be downloaded for iOS or Android devices.

  • Do Divinations for Yourself - Don't ever let anyone tell you that you cannot perform divinations for yourself. You absolutely can! While it's nice to have someone else do a reading for you on occasion, divination of any kind relies on time-tested forms of looking at a current situation and offering different approaches to the questioner otherwise known as the querent. What's more is that divination can be both important and useful because it utilizes symbolism. Almost anyone can read symbols and gain a real sense of what each one means for them on a personal level. Symbols have a way of revealing themselves to us through various, seemingly serendipitous events. Whether you find yourself drawn to astrology, numerology, iChing, Tarot or any other divination deck or system, performing divination regularly can help get you outside of your own headspace and cause you to look at things from a different perspective. We have a number of different types of tarot and divination decks, pendulums and classes to help you get started. We also have a number of professional readers on our staff in case you want confirmation of what you think the Universe might be trying to tell you.

  • Take a Class - If you are wanting to learn more about reading tarot, numerology, astrology, finding out how to connect to your ancestors, angels or spirit guides, taking a class can be a great way to get you started. We will also be having classes on herbalism, Ancient Egyptian Religion and Magic, mediumship, and bioregional witchcraft and a host of other topics that you can help you to empower yourself in the New Year!

  • Set Up a Home Altar - To quote my friend, Jason Miller, author and founder of Strategic Sorcery, "Altars are living, breathing things." You don't need a lot of space. Set up a small shelf and place favorite crystals, candles or assorted items that you identify with your spiritual self. The New Year is the perfect time of year to set up a sacred space with a home altar. Dedicate this space to your ancestors, house spirits or whatever Deity or representation of the Divine that you connect most deeply to. With a conscious effort to make offerings of cool water, incense and other items in this space, watch your life start to change! Remember to keep it clean. Just as you wouldn't invite friends or important guests to a dirty home, having an altar that is dusted and clean of any incense ash with flowers and other offerings that are kept fresh and clean, are most effective.

  • Keep a Journal - Writing things down and writing them out can help you connect not only consciously but subconsciously so that you can work them out. No matter what our individual challenges in life, we all have something we have to be grateful for Why not keep a gratitude journal this year? Sit down and consider all of the people, things and experiences that you have to be grateful for. Do this as often as you think of something and place it in a gratitude journal. A journal is also a great place to write down the challenges you are facing or even struggle with. If they are behaviors or habits you want to break write them down and resolve to leaven them behind this year. Check in with yourself occasionally and see how you 're doing. You may very well end up surprising yourself!

  • Get Rid of the Things that No Longer Serve You - The New Year is the perfect time to go through your home and get rid of the things that you haven't used. Of course, this process can be a bit of a challenge. A good rule of thumb is unless it is a family heirloom, ask yourself if you have worn it, used it, or will needed it over the past year. Then ask do you foresee using it in the coming year. If you can't answer yes, consider selling it, donating it or disposing of it (responsibly of course!). There is a natural tendency in the Universe that when we can and do let go of things, new things can enter into our lives. Besides, what you let go of may be just the thing someone else needs in their own life.

Those are a few ideas about starting 2019 on a more spiritual note. What are some of the things you can think of? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments section or on our Facebook page!
